Ford GT (2017)

2026-10-31 18:00:00

Core Design and Technical Features

The second-generation Ford GT is a high-performance American supercar featuring a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout.

Its standout technical highlights centre on extreme aerodynamics and a lightweight structure: built around a carbon-fibre monocoque paired with aluminium front and rear subframes, the vehicle is enveloped in aerodynamically sculpted carbon-fibre body panels, resulting in a dry weight of just around 1,385 kg.

Power comes from an IMSA motorsport-derived 3.5-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, churning out 647 hp (later uprated to 660 hp) and a peak torque of 550 lb-ft (approx. 746 Nm), paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

The car is fitted with ride-height-adjustable active suspension and an active rear wing, which significantly lowers ground clearance and alters aerodynamic profiles in Track mode, enabling a top speed of up to 216 mph (approx. 348 km/h).

Market Positioning and Historical Evolution

The Ford GT made its official debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) before entering production for the 2017 model year, marking the 50th anniversary of the legendary Ford GT40's historic triumph at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Offered through a stringent global application and allocation process, initial production numbers were kept strictly limited, targeting elite collectors and motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.

Beyond the standard production run, Ford also rolled out several track-focused and heritage-inspired special editions (such as the Carbon Series, Le Mans Heritage Editions, and the track-only, non-road-legal GT Mk II), cementing its status as the brand's ultimate engineering halo car.

Operational Standards and Maintenance

As a thoroughbred race-derived supercar, daily upkeep of the 2017 Ford GT differs vastly from standard passenger cars. The car must be kept in a climate-controlled garage and run strictly on factory-specified high-octane premium unleaded petrol (RON).

Given the extensive use of carbon-fibre composites and an intricate hydraulic active suspension system, all servicing and repairs concerning aero components, the powertrain, or chassis hardware must be carried out exclusively by Ford-certified high-performance technicians using specialised diagnostic tools. Unauthorised aftermarket intake/exhaust modifications or third-party ECU remapping are strictly prohibited to avoid compromising the car's aerodynamic balance and electronic control systems.
